No you cannot, you must reply to the summons within the allotted time. It is the law and they take it very seriously. This is absolutely the worst thing you could do, because they can easily prove you received it, (and ignored it). Why are people required to serve on a jury as a juror?
Jury duty is a requirement because without an ample supply of jurors our judicial system would not function. The judicial branch makes up one third of our government; the other two thirds being the legislative and executive branch. All three branches of our government are equal, so if one doesn’t function the others won’t as a result. Imagine if the office of the presidency was eliminated or if we had no representation in our government. The severity would equate to us have no functioning judicial system, a scary thought.

As long as your request is not for trivial reasons, most jurisdictions will have no problem rescheduling you. For example: full time college students aren’t usually asked to miss classes during the school year.
If I reply with a letter professing my disdain for the legal system, will they just not bother with me?
No, they will make a point of making you come in and get you on the record. This is probably the worst way to try to get out of jury duty and they despise it. They will go out of their way to make it as unpleasant for you as possible.
